So I fired up an old Mac with a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube, or the "TV tube" style monitors, in case anyone doesn't know the acronym), and I began seeing a bit what they're talking about.

Then I started imagining what it would be like viewing it on an un-calibrated monitor (which most people's monitors are) under office lighting and now see their point. I think it's a case of design exceeding the lowest common denominators (old or un-calibrated PC monitors). It's a tough call -- do you darken the headlines and links for those who haven't taken the time to calibrate their displays (or don't know how), or do you leave things as they are and alienate a vocal portion of your visitors? For what it's worth, it wouldn't bug me one way or the other.

Re: Welcome To The New Channel 3000.com - Madison News Story - WISC Madison

If you scroll down to the bottom of the homepage ... you will see a widget on the bottom right-hand side titled Multimedia -- the RSS feed is located at the top of that box. Personally, I think the written description of the forecast should be higher up. I also am not keen on the new interactive radar. The comercial aspecs of this site outweight the informative aspects greatly. I would stromgly recommend that you remove some or all of these comercial adds. If not I will simply refer to news site with less comercial activity. Case and point: what do you see at the very top of this page, higher then any other item. AN AD FOR NETFLIX!

You guys need to make up your mind, are you a news web site or one big comercial waste of my time. Just the fact mame! After all, it's related to the news you're reporting, right? Worried people won't see it in a submenu? You can also leave the link at the bottom of the page. Personally, it would be easier for me to find in the news submenu at the top of the page.

As for the weather: Do not like the layout at all. I can see putting the interactive radar at the top of the page, and the weather snapshot, but why bury the more detailed forecast so far down the page? I would:

• Swap the other radar images (the ones to the right of the interactive radar) for the Current Conditions.
• Then I would move the School Closings (... in summer. Really?!) and the Tower Cam boxes to their immediate left (you'll have to push those secondary radars we moved earlier down the page, along with the somewhat useless "Weather News")
• Once that's done, I'd move the Detailed Forecast up and below the Weather Alerts Box, which is much closer to the top of the page, and makes more sense (in an information flow sort of way) than splitting the weather alerts from the forecast with something frivolous like Tower Cams.

Re: Welcome To The New Channel 3000.com - Madison News Story - WISC Madison

I would like to see a return of the RSS feed. However, the light blue/grey print is much more difficult to read ... and at times, the headings or topics seem to run together (as they are positioned too close to each other). Maybe an asterisk or something before each topic could help.

Having the main topics in "black" print ... and then adding the subtopics in the blue/grey color might also help. I actually do like the contrast between these two colors ... but you may want to think about readability first.

Re: Welcome To The New Channel 3000.com - Madison News Story - WISC Madison

I know the Adds pay the bill but four or five on the front page is busy.
Could you at least strike the top add banners on the top of the front page?

Re: Welcome To The New Channel 3000.com - Madison News Story - WISC Madison

Pat, on many pages of the site is a video widget (top right part of page) on the bottom left part of the widget you will see the words "Live Now". I frequently check your site for weather, but avoided reading much news here, because the old site was so cluttered. This one is nicer and more professional looking. One thing is missing, though: a logo icon in the address bar for those of us who use Firefox and want to add it to the bookmark toolbar without taking up the space for text.

Re: Welcome To The New Channel 3000.com - Madison News Story - WISC Madison

Nice looking!
